Men's Silk Ties

Today I purchased some new silk ties from Goodwill. I just love men's silk ties. It's usually the first place I head for in a thrift store is the men's tie rack. I have collected quite a few of them over the years and often receive many of them as Christmas present from my family. Mainly cuz I always ask for them each year. I just want to share a few of the pictures of my stash.....

Here is a few more pictures of a little more of them...There is actually a small plastic container still full of ties under what you can see at the first picture.

Here is one of the quilts I have created with some of my ties. The quilt is a Dresden plate quilt. Each petal on the plates are made with ties and all of the leaves around the border are silk ties. I am still working on this quilt but only have a few more of the leaves yet left to applique. I hope to finish the top of this quilt very soon. I'm not sure if I want to hand quilt this quilt when the top is finished or machine quilt it. Hand quilting would require so much more time (even thou I would do something simple). Machine quilting I could just get the quilt finished. I have been working on it for a very, very long time, 5+ years and would really just like to see it finished.

The next quilt I plan to make with these ties will probably be a crazy quilt. But I am open for suggestion on how to use my remaining stash since I really have so many beautiful men's ties to still use up.....any thoughts?  Hope you enjoy the pictures....

  1. My sister in law taught me how to make the cutest little purses using 3 ties. I've yet to make one with the many many ties I've bought from the Good Will and St.Vincents. I've done a small wall hanging with my father's ties and a picture of him in the middle. Also a tree skirt is in the process.
    I envy your stash!

  2. that is certainly some stash you have there. I was at the K & S show in Harrogate last week and there was a dress on display made from recycled silk ties, will post a picture of it on my blog in the next couple of days. The quilt looks great, have not made one yet but I am doing a bit of crazy and have signed up for next year for a block a month.

    1. Hi Margaret, I will have to come over to see the dress. People can be so creative. I signed up for CQJP and BJP for next year also. These are wonderful site to be a part of. They keep me motivated.

  3. I also collect silk ties. At the crazy quilt retreat in Utah in Sept. we went to the Mormon thrift store... They had racks and racks and racks of ties...mostly $1. Not all that many in thrift stores here since men don't wear suits etc. that often... I love using them in fans...

    1. Gerry, Isn't it fun to find little treasure troves like that thrift store. Most of the ties here are a little more costly but thats ok. I usually only buy a few at a time. I have also thought about using the ties in a fan pattern. Will have to try. Thanks for coming over.

    1. Its almost as much fun to collect them as to use them. Pretty sure a crazy quilt will be in some of the ties future. I am also going to google to see what others have done. Thanks for coming on over.

  5. I think you are the first person I've known of that collects ties. The quilt you made is really nice. I do like the quality of most ties and have been tempted, but there is usually something else I want more. I've seen the little purses made with them too. They are wonderful.

    1. I know that collecting ties is a little strange but as you can see I'm not the only one...lol. My problem is stopping buying them. I'm sure I have more ties then I will ever really use but thats ok I guess. I just love all the beautiful patterns they come in. I am also going to google mens ties quilt and see what others have done. Have a great day Connie :)

  6. clothing items, thanks to your help. One thing I'm not sure about, though, is how to store my ties. Any ideas? ... As long as your closet has room for a rack, there's no reason to put it elsewhere.
